Manager Development

Creating High Performance

Aspiring, new or first few years

Specifically designed for new, recently appointed, or aspiring managers who need an overview of staff development and performance management, this course is an excellent introduction to High Performance management and professional systems and practices to get them started.

Sometimes new managers have been promoted to lead a team of staff with whom they used to work, and this can create a variety of challenges which need to be immediately addressed to get the new leader on the best path.

The course consists of two full days of training and development. The group size is limited to 15 attendees to ensure maximum participation as well as specific discussion regarding their specific management issues during the course of the program. These courses are offered every other month. Morning and afternoon tea is provided along with a light lunch.

Day One is separated from Day Two by approximately four weeks to allow the participants to return to work and gather information to support their learning and development. In addition, they may need to review the material and approach with their manager. And, by returning to the workplace, they return to Day Two's session with more understanding as well as more questions about how to start to implement this successful approach and often the "penny drops" after the second day of training, as the first day can be "a lot of information to take in".

Topics for Day One include:

  • A review of the role of a manager in developing other's performance,
  • A discussion on "manager talents" for practicing this new role,
  • Self-evaluation of their management approach,
  • Managing "up",
  • The keys to communication with staff (not telling people what to do),
  • Management "behaviours" that prevent communication,
  • Building a productive work relationship with each staff member,
  • Reaching agreement on short term expectations,
  • Appropriate recognition techniques to encourage improved performance,
  • Individual rewards systems,
  • One on one development of staff talents,
  • The Performance Management System (recruitment/training, staff assessment/goal setting, monitoring, feedback, coaching, rewards, and consequences of performance),
  • "Shifting" management style by staff task competence,
  • Daily planning/preparation,
  • The basics of delegation,
  • The concept of "continuous improvement".

Topics for Day Two include:

  • Coaching staff,
  • "Choices" for individual performance improvements,
  • Review of the talent development approach (relationship + right expectations + recognition + rewards),
  • An in-depth examination and discussion of the implementation of the Performance Management System (described above),
  • Feedback from employee surveys "What people want from their job and manager" to perform better,
  • Management exercises in adjusting "style' with different staff on different responsibilities,
  • Identification of individual talents and weaknesses,
  • An approach for helping staff manage their weaknesses,
  • Development of strengths in staff to improve performance,
  • Creating and managing a staff culture of providing 'great service' to internal and/or external stakeholders,
  • Overview of communication techniques to effectively work with all staff.

Course Structure

These workshops involve lecture, discussion, question and answer, and workbook exercises. After Day One, attendees are encouraged to obtain detailed position descriptions, evaluation processes, performance measurements, monitoring processes, rewards systems and other specific information to bring to the second day of training to aid their development and discussion.

Each attendee receives detailed copies of the presentations from both days of development along with a binder organising handouts on many of the above topics for future reference. In addition, a management reading list is provided to support the material delivered and discussed over the 16 hour sessions for participants to dig deeper into issues like personal organisation, leadership development, the importance of "talent", coaching style of management, and change management.

All participants receive a certificate of completion along with encouragement to contact our organisation for any support or questions which relate to any of the material they have received. Many managers contact us within the first two years of the training to ask specific questions and gain implementation techniques that relate more specifically to their management issues.

Maryana Altmark

I thoroughly enjoyed this course. I have downloaded to my manager and Regional manager ideas to improve keeping talented staff and ways to improve sales results and better communication mediums for staff. The course was easy to understand, the presenters had great energy and style as well as making it easy to understand.

Judy Stanfield

"The small group enabled individual attention which made this development program better than other courses that I have attended. Handling staff better and learning the concept of "managing up and down" in the organisation were my main outtakes. I found the program easy to relate to my work."

Nicole Gillie - Salamanca Financial Services

"For me the program provided very high quality information that I can use immediately in middle management (my current position) with other information handy for the future. Good follow-up."

Advanced Management

Create High Performance

Managers with a few years experience

Specifically designed for managers with two or more years of experience leading others. Many of these managers would have received some or significant training and development in prior programs. However, they may have had little skill development in staff performance management. An excellent program to provide practical skills and professional systems and practices for them to begin to use immediately. Sometimes experienced managers have tremendous technical and operational skills and their focus in management has been more of a "team leader" than a "coach" seeking to improve the talents of their team. There are unique challenges which need to be addressed to help these managers lead staff to higher performance.

The course consists of one full day of training and development. This is not a follow-up on the first two day program but new material to go deeper into the areas of talent management, staff coaching, performance management, people planning and developing the capacity of both individuals and the teams they are managing.

Topics include:

  • Challenging their role as an operational manager and focusing them on developing other's performance,
  • An assessment of their "manager talents" for the role of 'developer',
  • Self-evaluation of their current management approach,
  • Improving communication with staff (not telling people what to do),
  • Eliminating management "behaviours" that prevent communication,
  • Building productive work relationships with each staff member,
  • Reaching agreement on short term expectations,
  • Increasing recognition and the best techniques to encourage improved performance,
  • Designing individual rewards to thank staff,
  • One-on-one development of staff talents,
  • Using a Performance Management System (recruitment/training, staff assessment/goal setting, monitoring, feedback, coaching, rewards, and consequences of performance),
  • "Shifting" management style by staff task competence,
  • Daily priority planning/preparation,
  • Delegation to develop key staff,
  • Commitment to "continuous improvement" for themselves and their team.
  • Coaching staff,
  • Working with staff to make "choices" for individual performance improvements,
  • Implementing a talent development program (relationship + right expectations + recognition + rewards),
  • An in-depth examination and discussion of the implementation of the Performance Management System (described above),
  • Feedback from employee surveys "What people want from their job and manager" to perform better,
  • Management exercises in adjusting "style' with different staff on different responsibilities,
  • Identification of individual talents and weaknesses,
  • Managing staff weaknesses,
  • Developing strengths in staff to continually improve performance,
  • Creating and managing a staff culture of providing 'great service' to internal and/or external stakeholders,
  • An overview of communication techniques to effectively work with all staff.
